Welsh Terrier Information

A descendant of the Old English Black and Tan Terrier, the Welsh has been known in Wales since 1737.

Some of Britain's earliest sporting prints feature rough-coated black-and-tan terriers strikingly similar to the modern Welsh. A true working terrier, the Welsh was bred to hunt badger, fox and otter. Today's fanciers claim the breed retains so much of the hunting instinct that it could be used as a gun dog with a minimum of training.

Friendly, intelligent and eager to please are hallmarks of the Welsh Terrier. Although game, the Welsh is not quarrelsome. The well-mannered dog is a smart, responsive worker in obedience. The spunky Welsh is alert and spirited. This is a busy, active breed, best suited to a busy active family. His small size suits him to most accommodation, but the Welsh should have access to a good, safe exercise area where he can work off some of his exuberance.

Tough and sturdy, the Welsh measures about 15 in (38 cm) at the shoulder and weighs in the neighborhood of 20 lbs (9 kg).

The short coat should be wiry, dense, hard, close and abundant. There are dense and wiry furnishings on the muzzle and legs.

Looking very much like a miniature edition of an Airedale, the Welsh is always black-and-tan or black-grizzle-and-tan.

Considerable hand-stripping is necessary to keep the coat trim and wiry.
